Yin and Yang (陰陽)

Two labels for a comparison, not two kinds of thing.

In short

Yin and yang are two labels for how a pair of things stand to each other at a given moment: yin for the cooler, darker, slower, more contracted side of the pair, and yang for the warmer, brighter, faster, more expansive one.

The labels are relational, which is the part most explanations skip. Nothing is yin on its own. Water is yin next to fire and yang next to ice, and the same mountain has a yang south face and a yin north face. Ask which one a thing is without naming what it is being compared to and the question has no answer.

The characters say the same thing. 陰 is glossed in the Shuowen Jiezi as "dark: the south bank of a river, the north side of a mountain", and 陽 as "high and bright". Both describe a position relative to the sun, not a substance. A north-facing slope is yin because of where it sits, and it would be yang if you moved it.

The two are also not a scoreboard. Yin is not the bad half. Winter is yin and it is the season that stores everything the spring will spend, and in Chinese medicine the yin fluids are what keep the yang from burning out. A chart with no yin in it is not strong, it is unbalanced.

One common confusion is worth clearing up here. The taiji diagram, the black and white swirl, is usually called the yin-yang symbol, but its earliest clear textual record is from the early Ming, and the name "ancient taiji diagram" only appears in the late Ming. The classical texts describe the relationship in words long before anyone drew it as a fish. So there is no classical authority on which way the diagram should face.

Questions people ask about this term

Which is yin, black or white?

In the taiji diagram, black is yin and white is yang, which follows the usual reading of dark as cooler and quieter. But the assignment belongs to that diagram rather than to the terms. A black object that is hot and active is yang, because the labels follow the quality being compared, not the colour.

Is yin the bad half?

No, and the framing causes most of the confusion about the pair. Yin covers rest, storage, cooling, and inward movement. Without it, yang burns through its own supply. The two are read as a balance, so a chart or a room that is all yang is a problem rather than an achievement.

Are yin and yang female and male?

They have been mapped that way for a long time, and the mapping is a convention rather than the definition. The terms themselves describe any pair: hot and cold, day and night, outside and inside. Reading them as gender is one application of the pair, not what the words mean.

This page has no affiliate links and nothing to sell. The tables here are fixed by the tradition and you can check any of them against a printed almanac. What a chart means for a person is a reading of that tradition, not a finding, so treat it as a way to think about a situation rather than a prediction.
