Luck Pillars (大運)

Ten-year cycles layered over the fixed chart.

In short

Luck pillars (大運, dà yùn) are the ten-year cycles that follow a Bazi chart through life. Each one is a stem and branch pair, and each changes which elements are in play on top of the chart's eight fixed characters.

The eight characters of a chart do not change, so how can a reading say anything about timing. The luck pillars are the answer. They are an additional stem and branch pair, replaced every ten years, that sit alongside the chart and shift which elements are available.

They are built from the month pillar. Step forward through the sexagenary cycle or backward from it, and one of those two directions is chosen by whether the year stem is yang or yin together with whether the person is male or female. Both facts are needed, which is the reason identical birth details give a man and a woman different luck cycles.

The starting age is counted rather than assigned. Count the days from the birth to the next solar term if the sequence runs forward, or back to the previous one if it runs backward, and convert at three days to a year, one day to four months, one hour to five days. A birth a few days before a term can therefore start its first luck pillar in infancy.

This is also where a chart from a general AI tool usually breaks. Gender is part of the arithmetic, and a model that omits it produces a sequence that is correct for half the population and wrong for the other half. The four pillars may look right while the ten-year cycles are backward.

Questions people ask about this term

How are luck pillars calculated?

They start from the month pillar, step forward or backward one position at a time in the sixty-cycle, and change every ten years. The direction depends on the year stem's polarity and the person's gender. The starting age comes from counting days to the nearest solar term at three days per year.

Why do a man and a woman born at the same moment get different luck pillars?

Because gender decides which way the sequence steps from the month pillar. One steps forward through the cycle and the other steps backward, so the same birth details produce two different sequences. It is arithmetic rather than interpretation, and it is the step most often missing from AI-generated charts.

What is a luck pillar used for?

Timing. The natal chart describes what a person has to work with; the luck pillars describe when each part of it is in season. A year that looks difficult in the chart can be a good year if the current luck pillar supplies what the day master needs.
