Day Master (日主)

The one character everything else is measured against.

In short

The day master (日主, rì zhǔ, also written 日元) is the heavenly stem of the day pillar, the character that stands for the person the chart describes. Every other character in the chart is read as a relationship to it, which is why it is fixed first and never changes.

Group Building the chart

There are ten possible day masters, one for each stem, and which one you have is settled by the day you were born rather than by anything in the reading. It does not shift when the luck pillars change, and no amount of other elements in the chart replaces it.

The day master is what people usually mean when they say "my element". A 甲 day master is yang wood, a 癸 day master is yin water, and the reading is built on what that element needs. Two people with the same day master share a starting point and can still end up with opposite readings, because what the chart supplies differs.

The ten gods layer is entirely relative to this character. Wealth is not money sitting in the chart: it is whatever the day master controls. Power is whatever controls the day master. Resource is whatever produces it, and output is whatever it produces. Change the day master and every one of those labels moves, which is why a chart with the wrong day pillar is not a slightly wrong reading but a description of somebody else.

Strength is the next question, and it is decided mostly by the month branch. A day master with the season behind it is called strong, one without is called weak, and the terms are neutral. A strong day master is usually helped by being drained, and a weak one by being supported, so the same element in the same position helps one chart and hinders another.

Questions people ask about this term

How do I find my day master?

It is the stem of your day pillar, the third column in a standard chart layout. The calculator will show it labelled, and you can check it by hand from a ten-thousand-year calendar, which lists the stem and branch for every day.

Does my day master change over time?

No. It is fixed at birth by the day pillar and stays the same for life. Luck pillars bring new elements into play every ten years, and they change what the day master has to work with, but they do not change the day master itself.

Is the day master the same as my zodiac sign?

No, and they often point at different things. The zodiac sign comes from the year pillar, so it describes the environment a person was born into. The day master comes from the day pillar and describes the person. A Rat and a Horse can share a day master.
