The Tong Shu entry for today, without the paper booklet. The page recalculates each time it loads: lunar date, the day pillar, the officer that governs the day, the animal it clashes with, and the activities it marks suitable or not.

The pillars follow the solar terms, so the year turns at Li Chun in early February, not at Lunar New Year.

Holding an event date already? The Auspicious Date Checker reads a specific candidate date, adds the 12 two-hour periods, a monthly calendar and the 24 solar terms. For the rules behind the page, the Tong Shu guide explains each layer, and the date selection guide covers weddings, openings and moves.

How to read the day

The day pillar

Every day takes one of sixty stem and branch pairs. The pair sets the tone the almanac reads from, and the officer, the clash and the activity lists all follow from it.

The officer

Twelve officers rotate on a fixed cycle. Each one favors a family of actions: Establish for beginnings, Remove for clearing out, Success for finishing. The officer is the shortest summary of the day.

Clash and sha

The day branch clashes with one animal, which is the one personal check in the almanac. The sha is a compass direction the day opposes, and traditional practice avoids breaking ground toward it.

Get the 5-Minute Feng Shui Audit

The day sets the timing. The room sets the stage. This audit walks through nine areas of a home and what to fix in each.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Chinese almanac say about today?

It gives the day its own entry. This page reads the Tong Shu calendar for today and shows the lunar date, the day stem and branch, the officer that governs the day, the animal it clashes with, the sha direction, and the activities marked suitable or not suitable. It recalculates on every visit, so today means today.

Where do the suitable and avoid lists come from?

They come from lunar-javascript, an open implementation of the Chinese calendar that derives the lists from the day stem, branch and month. Printed almanacs disagree on a few entries, because publishers use different schools for the finer rules. This tool stays with one engine so its answers never contradict each other.

What is the day officer in the twelve officers cycle?

Twelve officers rotate in a fixed order: Establish, Remove, Full, Balance, Stable, Hold, Break, Danger, Success, Collect, Open, Close. Each favors a family of actions. Reading the officer is the fastest way to summarize a day before you dig into the activity list.

Is a bad day bad for everyone?

The ratings are general. The one personal check is the clash: if the day animal is the opposite of your birth year animal, the day is treated as poor for you regardless of everything else. A full birth chart filters further, and a date chosen for a wedding also weighs the couple charts.

How is this different from the Auspicious Date Checker?

Both use the same calendar engine. This page answers what today is for and finds the next days for one activity. The Auspicious Date Checker reads a specific candidate date and adds the 12 two-hour periods, a monthly calendar and the 24 solar terms. Browse here, then check the shortlisted date there.
