The 24 Solar Terms (二十四節氣)

The solar terms divide the solar year into 24 segments, each about 15 days. They guided Chinese agriculture for millennia and remain the framework for the lunar calendar, festivals, and date selection.

How the Chinese almanac works

The Tong Shu (通書)

The Chinese almanac has been published annually for over a thousand years. Each day is assigned a sexagenary stem-branch pair, and from this the day's suitable and unsuitable activities are derived.

Suitable and unsuitable

Activities marked "suitable" (宜 yí) are favored by the day's elemental configuration. Those marked "avoid" (忌 jì) are discouraged. These recommendations reflect the alignment of the day's energy with different types of human activity.

Zodiac clashes & hours

Each day's earthly branch clashes with one zodiac sign. Additionally, the 12 two-hour periods (時辰) each carry their own auspicious or inauspicious designation — useful for choosing the right time for important events.
