The zodiac love compatibility you see online — “Dragon and Dog: 40% match” — is what you get when you reduce Bazi to one animal sign. It would be like Western astrology calculating compatibility from sun sign alone, ignoring moon, rising, Venus, Mars, and the houses.
Real Bazi compatibility works with eight characters per person. Sixteen characters across two charts. The math is more complex and the answers are more specific.

The four levels of Bazi compatibility
Level 1: Day Master attraction
Your Day Master is your core element — who you are at the level below personality. The interaction between two Day Masters predicts the baseline energy of a relationship.
The producing cycle (supportive attraction):
- Wood feeds Fire → Wood person gives energy to Fire person
- Fire creates Earth → Fire person warms Earth person
- Earth bears Metal → Earth person stabilizes Metal person
- Metal enriches Water → Metal person clarifies Water person
- Water feeds Wood → Water person nourishes Wood person
In a producing pair, one person naturally supports the other. The giver feels valued. The receiver feels held. This is the most comfortable compatibility pattern — but it is not always equal. One person does more giving.
The controlling cycle (challenging attraction):
- Wood depletes Earth
- Earth dams Water
- Water extinguishes Fire
- Fire melts Metal
- Metal chops Wood
Controlling pairs generate friction. This is not automatically bad — it is the friction that makes the relationship interesting. The controlling person challenges the other to grow. The controlled person keeps the controller humble. These relationships burn hotter and fight louder. They are rarely boring.

Level 3: Five-element balance between charts
A relationship is an elemental exchange. Your chart has elements in surplus and elements in deficit. Your partner’s chart has the same.
The best compatibility pattern: each person supplies the element the other lacks. If you have too much Fire and your partner has too much Water, the relationship naturally cools you down and warms them up. If both of you have too much Fire, the relationship amplifies the heat — exciting while it lasts, but exhausting without deliberate cooling activities (time in nature, separate hobbies, Water-element practices).
The worst pattern: both people lack the same element. Two Water-deficient people in a relationship will both feel ungrounded, both avoid emotional depth, both struggle to commit. They understand each other’s deficiency but cannot supply what the other needs.
Level 4: Luck Pillar timing
Two people with compatible charts can meet at the wrong time. If one person is in a Luck Pillar that amplifies their controlling element while the other is in a Pillar that weakens their Day Master, the relationship will feel harder than the chart comparison alone would predict.

How to do a rough compatibility check

- Compare element distributions — does each person supply what the other lacks?
- Look at current Luck Pillars — is either person in an unfavorable cycle?
