How Bazi works
The four pillars
Your Bazi chart has four pillars — year (年柱), month (月柱), day (日柱), and hour (时柱). Each pillar consists of a heavenly stem (天干) and an earthly branch (地支). Together, the eight characters (八字) map to your birth moment.
The Day Master
The heavenly stem of your day pillar is called the Day Master (日主). In Bazi analysis, it represents you — your core self, personality, and constitution. Everything else in the chart is interpreted relative to the Day Master.
Five elements balance
Each stem and branch carries a five element quality (wood, fire, earth, metal, water). Counting your elements reveals what's abundant and what's missing — useful for understanding your natural tendencies and where balance is needed.
